In 1952, the South Carolina Dental Association recommended that a school of dentistry be established as a unit of the Medical College of South Carolina. The state legislature authorized the development of the School of Dental Medicine the following year, but it was not until 1964 that the legislature provided the funds to implement the 1953 authorization. The first dental medicine student was admitted in 1967 and the first class of twenty-one students received DMD degrees in June 1971.

Membership and Dues

The College of Dental Medicine Alumni Association membership is made up of dues-paying dentists who are either completed a degree or graduate training program from the College of Dental Medicine (regular membership) or graduates of another dental school (associate membership).

Non-alumni may be admitted to associate membership by invitation. Applicants for associate membership must be recommended to the board of directors by an active or life member. Designation of nominated individuals as associate members will be at the discretion of the board of directors.

Associate members are entitled to all benefits of regular membership except for voting privileges.

Faculty of the College of Dental Medicine, regardless of their school of graduation, are eligible for full membership in the Association, including voting privileges.

Dues for regular and associate members are identical. Dues are $30 per year and are assessed on a fiscal year basis (July 1 - June 30). Dues are billed by mail. Life memberships are available at $500 which may be paid in five yearly installments of $100. Members of each newly graduated senior class are afforded one year's free membership in the association. Students who are members of the Dental Student Alumni Council are granted honorary membership in the association while they are students.

Volunteering Opportunities

The Dental Student Alumni Council is seeking degree and residency alumni willing to come to campus to share career information with current students through the ongoing career seminar series sponsored by the Alumni Association. These activities provide an opportunity for students to learn more about residency requirements, features of practice in general or specialty areas of dentistry, and characteristics and skills needed for a dentist to be successful in professional practice in a relaxed, after-hours setting. Being able to learn from graduates who have entered practice before them is an invaluable tool for students. If you are able to share your experience and knowledge of your field with current students, please contact Betsy Waters in the MUSC Alumni Office at (843) 792-7979, local, (888) 202-90306, toll-free, or via e-mail at watersb@musc.edu.
