The School of Allied Health Sciences (SAHS), now the College of Health Professions, was formally established by action of the board of trustees of the Medical College of South Carolina in 1966. Its inception grew from recognition that the explosive growth in health care and its accompanying sophisticated technology had created a need to produce more and better-prepared paramedical professionals.

The school brought together five hospital-based training programs that previously had been under the aegis of their respective medical departments. Medical technology, radiologic technology, cytotechnology, inhalation therapy and nurse anesthetist programs were the first to be included in the SAHS. The primary objective of the school was the recruitment and training of allied health science personnel in sufficient numbers to meet the need in South Carolina.

On June 6, 1968, the new school awarded its first bachelor of science degrees to one cytotechnology and four medical technology candidates. Dr. William M. McCord, MUSC president, predicted that the school would show the greatest acceleration in student body of any school on campus and that its programs would be extremely valuable to medicine and South Carolina. This statement would indeed prove prophetic.

The college expanded to offer more than 20 different training options in the paramedical field. In 1984, lower division certificate and associate degree programs were transferred administratively to Trident Technical College (with the College of Health Profession functioning as the primary clinical affiliate). The college now offers eight baccalaureate, seven masters degree programs, and a doctoral program in health administration.
