College of Medicine

The College of Medicine, founded in 1824, was the first medical school in the southern United States. The college pioneered in clinical teaching and its faculty members wrote some of America's first medical textbooks. For over 170 years, the College of Medicine has been dedicated to the training of physicians. Today, it is comprised of more than 25 departments which independently and collectively contribute to the education of future physicians.

The College of Medicine admits 135 students each year into its four-year medical curriculum. The students are awarded a doctor of medicine (MD) degree upon their completion of the college's academic requirements. Two years of basic science instruction and two years of clinical education are closely supervised by full- and part-time faculty members.

In addition, the College of Medicine, in conjunction with the College of Graduate Studies, offers the Medical Scientist Training Program which leads to an MD/PhD degree.

Continuing Education

The College of Medicine offers several continuing education programs throughout the year through the MUSC Continuing Medical Education office. To learn more, visit their Web site or contact the office directly at (843) 876-1925.

You can also contact the MUSC Continuing Education office toll-free at 1-866-637-6835 to get information on any MUSC supported continuing education activity.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Medical Student Alumni Council is seeking degree and residency alumni willing to come to campus to share career information with current students through the ongoing Specialty Seminars series sponsored by the Alumni Association. These activities provide an opportunity for students to learn more about residency requirements, features of practice in general or specialty areas of medicine, and characteristics and skills needed for a physician to be successful in professional practice in a relaxed, after-hours setting. Being able to learn from graduates who have entered practice before them is an invaluable tool for students. If you are able to share your experience and knowledge of your field with current students, please contact Peggy Singletary in the MUSC Alumni Office at (843) 792-7979, local, (888) 202-90306, toll-free, or via e-mail to singletp@musc.edu.
